Let’s Play!
Play researchers are adamant that authentic play is (and has always been) the most critical activity of early childhood. Outdoor play, especially unstructured, helps children grow both physically and emotionally. What's more, it's free! Here are some key benefits outdoor play can provide your child.
· Promoting creativity and imagination through play
· Improving problem-solving skills through games
· Promoting emotional and social development by learning to play well with others
· Engendering a sense of self and a sense of place, allowing children to recognize both their independence and interdependence
· Improving motor skills as balance, coordination, and agility, which are critical for growing bodies
Far from being frivolous, play is the fuel that drives healthy physical development as well as brain development. Both are so important for your child's lifelong learning.
I grew up in a close-knit neighborhood with lots of neighbor kids around my age. I can remember many games of hide and seek, swimming events, birthday parties in the cul de sac, chalk art, and bike rides. These were fun times with friends and I never even realized that it was helping me grow and develop in so many ways. It was just fun. I enjoyed my time outdoors, which has lasted into adulthood.
